According to the organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the area of information technology and communication technology (ICT) includes all activities that allow produce, process and transform information and communication, using an electronic process. In this sense, almost all areas of activity can be found listed in the ICT sector: agro-industry, culture, information, communication, journalism, livestock, science education, population sciences …

Specifically, these technologies enable the developing countries to ameliorate the life of people in most remote areas possible by mobile phones and offers multiple opportunities for innovation and jobs. Therefore, the ICT increases productivity and competitiveness factors trigger economic growth.

Theme : " ICT serving the community "

Pushing each area of activity to hatch, ICT now become the chief friend, and tool used by populations. Organizing the first MarouaCamp with theme "ICT serving the community ", is to provide an opportunity for individual participants, organizers see how to develop and emerge locally and in the global world.

Maroua

Maroua is one of the main cities of Cameroon. This is the capital of the Far North region and the Department of Diamaré. Located in the northern part of the city, there’re many tourist attractions, socio-cultural, economic and important human population mixture.

It’s University, one of the most recent public institutions of higher education in the country, consists of two schools that make it one of the hubs in the three northern regions: “The Higher Institute of the Sahel” and “Ecole Normale Supérieure de Maroua.”

In this context, the MarouaCamp wants to be an opportunity to combine youths, lovers and the actors of the ICT sector of the Far North region to the rest of the volunteers and “usual suspects” of Barcamp Cameroon annually organized nationally. The Adamawa and North Regions are also privileged to be part of this meeting scheduled Saturday, October 13th, 2012.

MarouaCamp the 2012 first edition will be held at the “Centre des Technologies Appropriées de Maroua”(a site of the Higher Institut of Sahel). For this occasion, the two great schools of the University of Maroua will be joint sponsors: Higher Institut of Sahel and Ecole Normale Supérieure de Maroua.

Program

MarouaCamp 2012 will take place throughout the day on Saturday, October 13th 2012. The appointment is scheduled to host four sessions:

  • 1. Developing Northern Regions (ICT4D)
  • 2. ICT for education
  • 3. Coding Sessions
  • 2. Free topics

Special sessions of GOING KOMPYUTA (workshop concerning computerization of mother tongues) of the Goethe-Institut Kamerun will also take place this day

In order to have an attractive content, the call for proposal submissions is open as well. No need to be a genius or be of a certain social class to speak during the Barcamp.

NB : Applications from women, developers or not, are eagerly awaited. Participants who are not computer programmers or developers are also targeted audiences. In addition, subjects on ICT for development, education and the future of the northern regions of Cameroon have the scoop in this first edition.
